13 FASTING ALLOWS US to naturally empty the sugar from our body (the sugar bowl).

QUOTE from Dr Fung (emphasis mine):

FASTING FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES:

FASTING ALLOWS US to naturally empty the sugar from our body (the sugar bowl). Once empty, any incoming sugar will no longer spill out into the blood, and we will no longer meet the criteria for diabetes. We will have reversed the disease. As far back as 1916, Dr. Joslin reported the benefits of fasting for diabetes. In the modern era, reports dating to 1969 confirm these benefits. Thirteen obese patients were hospitalized to treat their weight issues and were found incidentally to also have type 2 diabetes. They fasted for seventeen to ninety-nine days and averaged a 43-pound weight loss. Diabetes completely reversed, without exception. Interestingly, this reversal did not depend upon weight loss, reflecting yet again that it is not the total fat loss that matters, but ectopic fat loss.” [1]

NOTE (my commentary) – What does it say?

Type 2 diabetes is the result of too much sugar causing too much insulin and a vicious circle. Eventually, there is no room in the cells for the extra sugar, and the presence of extra sugar causes the pancreas to continue to secrete more insulin than is helpful.

The wise thing to do is to stop ingesting sugar and the various nutrients that cause blood glucose to rise, such as carbohydrates and fructose. Protein can also be a source of sugar; protein can be broken down into amino acids. The liver can use amino acids to create glucose through biochemical reactions (gluconeogenesis).

FASTING ALLOWS US to naturally empty the sugar from our body (the sugar bowl).

Dr. Fung suggests we imagine the body as a sugar bowl that is not only full to the brim but overflowing with sugar poured into it from above. Fasting allows us to naturally empty the sugar from our body, the sugar bowl. As there is less sugar in the blood, insulin levels decrease naturally and insulin resistance lowers. Once empty, any incoming sugar will no longer spill out into the blood, and we will no longer meet the criteria for diabetes. We will have reversed the disease. When we fast, the sugar in the body is burned as fuel; when the sugar is gone, the body shifts to ketogenesis, burning fat for fuel.

Diabetes completely reversed, without exception.

Fasting can reverse type 2 diabetes. In one case, thirteen patients fasted for seventeen to ninety-nine days and averaged a 43-pound weight loss. Diabetes completely reversed, without exception. Interestingly, this reversal did not depend upon weight loss, reflecting yet again that it is not the total fat loss that matters, but ectopic fat loss.

Ectopic fat loss is fat placed by insulin in tissue that normally contains only small amounts of fat, such as the liver, skeletal muscle, heart, and pancreas. Fat in the liver leads to the condition of “fatty liver” – the function of both the liver and the pancreas are impaired as they are clogged with fat. (I have NAFLD – non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.)

Some theorize that the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin are exhausted and no longer able to produce insulin. It might be more accurate to say that they are “smothered” as the ability to produce insulin is often restored when the pancreas is no longer clogged with ectopic fat. And ectopic fat is utilized first by the body when fasting initiates ketosis, with significant, immediate health improvements.

MY STRATEGY: Naturally empty the sugar bowl of my body by fasting; lose ectopic fat first, which can reverse type 2 diabetes.
